Enrolling at Ngākōroa

Enrolments

We welcome enrolments from all ākonga in Years 1 - 8 who live within our Ministry of Education approved enrolment zone.  Let us know your intention to enrol as early as possible by filling in the enrolment form via the link below.  This will help us best plan to meet your child's needs.  Once you have filled in our online enrolment form, you will be contacted to arrange a personalised school tour and visit with a member of our leadership team.

Ngākōroa School will not be accepting any out of zone enrolments in 2025.

Cohort Entry

Our school operates a cohort entry policy.  This means that new entrants (5 year olds) start on the cohort date after their 5th birthday.  Cohort entry dates are set by the Ministry of Education each year, in 2024 these dates are:

Term 1: 31st January & 11th March

Term 2: 29th April & 4th June

Term 3: 22nd July & 26th August  

Term 4: 14th October & 18th November

All other age groups start on the Monday after they have completed enrolment paperwork.

The guidelines for development and operation of enrolment schemes are issued under Schedule 20 section 4 of the Education and Training Act 2020 (formerly section 11G (3) of the Education Act 1989) for the purpose of describing the basis on which the Secretary's powers in relation to enrolment schemes will be exercised. 

Home Zone
All students who live within the home zone described below and/or shown on the map shall be entitled to enrol at the school.

Starting at the intersection of Bremner Road and SH 1, travel west along Bremner Road (27 and above only included) to the end of Bremner Road and then along to the coastline to the end of Oira Road. Travel south along Oira Road (odd addresses included) to Karaka Road. From the intersection of Oira Road and Karaka Road (Odd addresses 335-323 and addresses 160 and below only included) travel across country southeast towards Burtt Road on the southern side of the railway. Travel south along Burtt Road (141 and above only included) to Needham Road (both sides included). From Needham Road, travel across country to the intersection of Kincora Lane and Runciman Road. Travel north along Runicman Road (733,726 and above only included) to Great South Road. From the intersection of Runicman Road and Great South Road (564-1176 only included), travel east across country to SH 1 and follow the motorway north back to the starting point.All residential addresses on boundary roads an no exit roads off boundary roads are included in the one unless otherwise stated

Proof of residence within the home zone will be required.

Each year, applications for enrolment in the following year from in-zone students will be sought by a date which will be published in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school. This will enable the board to assess the number of places which can be made available to students who live outside the home zone. 

Special Programmes

This priority category is not applicable at this school because the school does not run a Special programme approved by the Secretary.

Out of Zone Enrolments
Each year the board will determine the number of places which are likely to be available in the following year for the enrolment of students who live outside the home zone. The board will publish this information by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school. The notice will indicate how applications are to be made and will specify a date by which all applications must be received.

Applications for enrolment will be processed in the following order of priority:

  • First Priority  This priority category is not applicable at this school because the school does not run a special programme approved by the Secretary.
  • Second Priority  will be given to applicants who are siblings of current students.
  • Third Priority will be given to applicants who are siblings of former students.
  • Fourth Priority will be given to any applicant who is a child of a former student of the school.
  • Fifth Priority will be given to any applicant who is either a child of an employee of the board of the school or a child of a member of the board of the school.
  • Sixth Priority will be given to all other applicants.

If there are more applicants in the second, third, fourth, or fifth priority groups than there are places available, selection within the priority group will be by a ballot conducted in accordance with instructions issued by the Secretary under Schedule 20 section 4 of the Education and Training Act 2020 (formerly section 11G (3) of the Education Act 1989). Parents will be informed of the date of any ballot by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school.

Applicants seeking second or third priority status may be required to give proof of a sibling relationship.
